Episode 71 – Nostalgia Games

Most of us have had that moment where you are playing one video game or another, and something sparks your memory of when you were  younger playing games, and had that magical quality of nothing but fun. What do you think of people making games just to trigger that nostalgia? Or people who criticize games for not re-creating that *magic* they remember from days gone by? Editors note: Or many many many days gone by. I’m looking at you, Charles.

We weren’t shy about not being thrilled with the idea of people criticizing games for not recreating something that you’ll never get back. Here is the r/Diablo3 post that got Spengler all fired up on the topic in the first place!

Game Maker is $99 for the professional license, but there is also a limited free license as well if you want to dig up those Legend of Zelda maps that you drew on graph paper as a kid!

The incredibly silly game that I was having trouble remembering is Viscera Cleanup Detail: Shadow Warrior – where you go around cleaning up all the gore you left behind when you played Shadow Warrior. (Doesn’t require you to have played Shadow Warrior)

We’ve talked about Rise of the Triad before, but for reals – you need to give this game a shot! (You’ll need to enter your DOB to see the Steam page here)

Playing At the World is an exhaustive research and background on Tabletop games and RPG’s – well worth the read! ($17.99 for the Kindle)

Also to put it out there that it isn’t just Jon trying to make me feel better – Final Fantasy IV (Final Fantasy II when first released in the US) was made significantly easier for US audiences, so when playing the remake, it’s harder than you might remember!

Dawn of the Immortals is the mobile game Charles is playing now. You have to ignore the crazy big busted lady on the itunes page here though!

Here is the quote from Brianna Wu about next gen game pricing:
