Diary Of My First Cosplay – Part 3

Diary of my first cosplay: DEAR DIARY, At this point it is only 10 days until PAX and I may or may not be freaking out about trying to pull off this costume before then. (Pro-tip – if you’re going to do your first cosplay, make sure you give yourself more than 3 weeks before the day you plan to wear it) Turns out, i’m not super great at planning things. oh well!

cutting_editI finally sat down with my friend Paula from 3D Media Magic and started sewing the skirt for this project. I only managed to stab myself about 4 times with pins holding the pattern down, and no blood on the finished product. The skirt seemed deceptively easy to make – and I say that because I had a professional seamstress looking over my shoulder telling me what to do! There were only 3 panels to cut out, and with a lunch break and time to harass her two dogs, we completed the skirt in about 3.5 hours!

Here is what I have figured out so far. In my head I figured Snow White would have been wearing a fitted pencil skirt. not once do you see her with her jacket undone to where you can see what her skirt looks like – if the shirt is tucked in or not – what kind of zipper does she have – etc. So I need to not care what so ever that I will have an elastic waist band that not a single person is going to see! I am thrilled to say that this skirt may not be “comfortable”, but it will be at least something I can wear easily, sit down on the floor if needed, etc. It will be uncomplicated!

Sewing

What I have also learned is that the floor peddle on these sewing machines make the fabric move stupid fast. So for the… is there a word that comes before novice? Anyways, for the person who hasn’t used a sewing machine ever, there is (at least on this handy one) a setting to make the floor peddle move the fabric slower. At that point I only stabbed myself another 3 times, and made the hem straight!

So now I have the completed skirt, I have the fabric for the shirt, and the coat that I need to add a few buttons to. Last up is to make the shirt (UGH), and add the buttons to the jacket. And then, because I am a crazy lady… did you guys see this last week? The pictures of the cel shaded jeans of the Borderlands cosplay?  I’m contemplating doing something similar to the coat i’ll be wearing. Snow White always has the creases on the front of her coat, i’m wondering if I could recreate that?

CelShadeMakeupAnd then there is this crazy idea. How rad is the cel shading makeup?? I’m afraid that the cel shading on the jacket and on the makeup might make me look more like i’ve just got dirt on my face and jacket until someone sees me head on, but I still think it’s a cool idea. One that i’m aiming to try, and will give myself the option to pull the plug on the morning of before I put eyeliner all over my face!

Have any of you tried any cel shading on your cosplays before? I would love to know any insights you might have!
