Diary Of My First Cosplay – Part 2
Because I’ve made the mistake now since starting on this journey to look at some professional cosplayers sites, I want to remind everyone that this is a diary of my first cosplay – I have ZERO clue what I am doing. I thought I”d just document the process for funsies.
I mentioned last time that I had narrowed down who I wanted to cosplay as: Snow White from The Wolf Among Us. My biggest challenge I saw then was the bloody shirt (not actually bloody, though that would fit for a particular scene of the game). My initial google-fu failed me in trying to see if this particular shirt already existed and if I could just order it. That’s a negative ghost rider. So I consulted my local seamstresses and asked how difficult would it be to make this shirt? I’ve been assured not very, though I think they are supremely overestimating my skills.
So I moved on to fabric hunting. I have only walked into 3 fabric shops since I started this project, but when asking for fabric that might have any snowflakes on it, each time I have been directed to a corner of the shop that looks like Frozen threw up bolts of fabric somewhere. Elsa’s dress from Frozen is apparently the hottest thing in town. (Literally. Half that fabric is warm felt and it’s nearly 100 bloody degrees out there. Are you guys nuts???) So, to the internet! I actually found the fabric I wanted first on Etsy, but the seller wouldn’t respond about selling it in more than just one yard, so I took the name of the pattern to google and found a shop that would sell me the 3 yards I wanted. This is the closest I could find for the shirt fabric, and I’m pretty happy with it.
My next challenge has been the skirt. Because the game is cell shaded and sometimes in shadow or in dark areas, it’s really hard to figure out exactly what color it is. Soooooo… I just took a stab at it. It really looks like her skirt is a standard denim kind of color to me, so I meandered over to a fabric store, showed a picture to some very nice ladies and ended up with this fabric. I also thumbed through any number of pattern books that made me think that there has to be a market out there for any number of people who miss shoulder pads.
I picked out a pattern for a skirt and a button up shirt. The shirt is my biggest challenge that I’ll be farming out for some assistance. I can do everything but modify the collar. Snow White’s collar does a… v shape thing? Whatever you want to call it, for the life of me, I couldn’t find a pattern for it. So my good friend Paula from 3D Media Magic is going to assist me in this venture, and free hand that part. Pictures to come of me swearing at a sewing machine!
My last purchase so far has been the jacket, which was way easier than everything else up to this point. For the bargain price of $35, I found this coat that fits, and the only difference is that there aren’t enough buttons. Same friend from 3d Media Magic has graciously offered to assist in my sewing a few extra buttons on to this coat so it has 4 buttons instead of just one.
I feel like I’ve done a lot of work so far, and not a lot to show for it. There are less than 3 weeks until PAX when I hope to wear this cosplay, so lots to do! Again, if you have any suggestions, please let me know!
