Episode 41 – Equality in Nerddom
We didn’t set out to crusade for equality and tolerance in nerd culture, but it needs to be done. Megan went to a unConference (see the link below) where some good and bad ideas were discussed. It’s true that it would be great to see more women get into STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Mathematics) fields and we have some opinions about that. We also have thoughts about the need for acceptance of minorities (be it gender, race, or sexual orientation) into the larger nerd culture and fandoms. So our basic plea to our fellow nerds: c’mon, let’s just all be happy to be nerds and happy that we’re not alone in our hobbies and interests! We all just want to be accepted for our similarities, not judged and ostracized for our differences.
