Gaming Convention – Day 18 D&D 40th Anniversary Blog Hop

This is day 18 of the of d20 Dark Ages’ D&D 40th Anniversary Blog Hop Challenge! Based off of the challenge’s prompts I will be sharing personal stories about my history with Dungeons & Dragons every day in February. Day 18: What was the first gaming convention you attended?

I joined my friend Pel in busing to downtown Seattle to attend my first gaming convention: the 2007 Penny Arcade Expo in the Washington State Convention Center. Table-top gaming certainly had a presence in the convention back then even it was small. That all changed after the first episode of the Penny Arcade/PVP D&D Podcast aired in 2008. That podcast (and subsequent podcasts) were such a runaway success that Wizard of the Coast’s presence at at the convention exploded in the following years, culminating in the first live 2010 Celebrity D&D game. Now PAX wouldn’t feel the same without that huge beholder being moved around each day.

It doesn’t need to be said, but PAX is pretty awesome. If you like video games, table-top games, board games, card games, or meeting new people that care about the same silly things you do, heading to any PAX is a worthwhile venture.
