First Edition War – Day 16 D&D 40th Anniversary Blog Hop

This is day 16 of the of d20 Dark Ages’ D&D 40th Anniversary Blog Hop Challenge! Based off of the challenge’s prompts I will be sharing personal stories about my history with Dungeons & Dragons every day in February. Day 16: Do you remember you first Edition War?

Yes, I do remember my first edition war. I found myself embroiled in the rampant neckbearding when 4E came out simply because I liked 4E. I was somehow dumbing down the hobby and turning into World of Warcraft by liking daily powers and rechargeable monster attacks. It was a surreal experience that I didn’t see coming. I did my best to insulate myself against it.

Don’t get me wrong, I have opinions on games. I’ll defend 4E as the best version of modern D&D until I’m blue in the face. But when 4E came out I was playing in a 3.5 game and a running a 4E game at the same. I could understand that they were two different games with different goals, allowing me to enjoy both while it was clear that others couldn’t. (I still get into the occasional argument about how 4E “doesn’t allow for roleplaying,” which explodes into a much larger conversation.)

I understand the emotion behind edition wars. It’s sad when your game of choice isn’t officially supported any more! But it’s only through petty cliquishness and fear that people take that sadness and use it as fuel to tell other people that they’re having bad-wrong-fun.
