First Bad Edition? – Day 15 D&D 40th Anniversary Blog Hop

This is day 15 of the of d20 Dark Ages’ D&D 40th Anniversary Blog Hop Challenge! Based off of the challenge’s prompts I will be sharing personal stories about my history with Dungeons & Dragons every day in February. Day 15: What was the first edition of D&D you didn’t enjoy? Why?

I’m going to digress here. This question assumes that we define our hobby more by what we don’t like rather than what we do like, which is a cutting look into D&D culture. After 40 years of playing pretend we should be celebrating through positivity, not through an edition war question. I have seven years of experience playing and running weekly and bi-weekly games of 3.5, Pathfinder, 4E, and 13th Age. I’ve enjoyed every single edition. They are all games that can provide an experience worth having and sharing. As Hannah so pointed stated, she’s not sure why this question isn’t ‘what is your favorite edition of D&D and why?’

I initially thought about ignoring the question completely, but I will say that 3.5 and Pathfinder are the least suited to my needs as a GM and player. The legwork needed to play the game isn’t to my taste, both designing characters and designing challenges. But despite the game not being suited to my needs 3.5 and Pathfinder still provided me 3+ years of fun and friendship. Let’s focus on the fun guys.
