This is day 10 of the of d20 Dark Ages’ D&D 40th Anniversary Blog Hop Challenge! Day 10: What was the first gaming magazine you ever bought? (Dragon, Dungeon, White Dwarf, etc.)
I have never bought a “gaming” magazine in my life, unless you count the stacks of Nintendo Power and Scrye I had in my room in elementary and junior high.
When I jumped into organizing a D&D game it was using 4th Edition when Dungeons & Dragons Insider was brand new and had a full tank of gas. Weekly Dragon and Dungeon articles were published digitally through DDI but I rarely read them. The content within those articles that was relevant to my game, like new monsters, items, and player powers, were filtered into DDI’s online Compendium and Character Creator tools. All other community building I needed came from blogs and forums.
The way that I interacted with D&D and its fans never included printed magazines. It’s amazing that the way we communicate has changed so quickly and completely that I missed out entirely by just a few years.
