Why I’m excited for Bioshock Infinite Burial at Sea

Before I fanboy about Bioshock Infinite Burial at Sea, let me say, Bioshock (the original) is my favorite game of all time, hands down. I will never forget sitting about 6 inches from my very first 32” HDTV (running at a STUNNING 720p resolution) to absorb every single glorious pixel. My trip to rapture was an experience I’ll never forget. I even stood in line for a midnight release back in 2007 when Bioshock first came out (these were the days before Amazon Release Day Delivery). I played the game through twice from start to finish, and even today it’s the only xbox 360 game that I completed multiple times and got all of the achievements for. So yeah, I’m a fan.

Bioshock 2 was a disappointment (lots of reasons, one of which is that it was developed by another studio), and not until Bioshock Infinite did I feel another title came along that was truly lived up to the Bioshock potential.

I’m about 80% done with Infinite, and it’s definitely an amazing experience (albeit in the clouds vs under the sea). But still for me, it lacks that amazing, life-changing experience of Bioshock the original. You can imagine my excitement when I found out about DLC for Infinite allowing players to return to Rapture (at its heyday none the less), in Burial at Sea. The DLC has no release date but will sell for around $19.99 for a two-episode bundle. One episode lets you play as Booker Dewitt – the protagonist from Infinite, and the other episode lets you play as his companion Elizabeth (otherwise known as the best NPC of all time).

I. Can’t. Wait. You can see a preview of the first few minutes of Burial at Sea Here: http://mashable.com/2013/10/08/bioshock-infinite-burial-at-sea/ From what I can tell, it’s going to be amazing.

For me video games are all about the art of escapism – good games let you forget your day-to-day life, and great games become a world of their own and are truly immersive. Even on a small (by today’s standards) LCD HTDV, Bioshock totally took me away as I became engulfed in its watery world.  In fact, I’ve been itching to play the original again as soon as I can.

Another DLC for Infinite, called Clash in the Clouds, was released earlier this year. It’s a non-story arena style add on that allows players to earn new perks and weapons. But there’s no way it can compare to Burial at Sea and gets a big yawn from me. It’s kind of sad the days of midnight releases are slowly going away in exchange for release day delivery and digital downloads, but you can bet the very DAY and MINUTE that Burial at Sea is released, I’ll be sitting in front of my xbox 360, ready to go!
