SkullGirls
I have a soft spot for 2D fighters – I think maybe it’s because I grew up in the age of arcades where you would bring your quarters to duke it out on Street Fighter or Mortal Kombat? (MK2 was my absolute favorite btw) So when SkullGirls came across my desk, I couldn’t help but give it a shot! I’ll tell you right now, the art is wonderful, but this game is titty-o-clock.
Check out the trailer for the game here: http://youtu.be/jxLZEdDfR_g. Even the trailer starts off with the line “Legend tells of an ancient artifact that can grant a woman’s wish…” and the first words out of my mouth after that two minute trailer is “Why wouldn’t she just wish for a pair of pants??”
The game as a fighter is fun. Your moves are unique to your character and still make it visually appealing to stick with the game to watch the fights to the end. For example when you play as Parasoul, her punches use her demon eyeball umbrella thing (did that ever get explained? I still don’t know why it has eyeballs!!), and I can’t stop watching the moves by Ms. Fortune, when you separate your limbs and wrap your muscle tissue around your opponent? That is as awesome as it is totally creepy!
I found the difficulty ramped up pretty quickly as you run through the gauntlet to get to your end boss. I faced a 3 stage attack, that no lie, took me 30 some odd minutes, a beer and a lot of swearing at my TV. There are (as to be expected) different difficulty modes, so I put the game on sleepwalk so I could quickly hammer through to watch the story for each character.
And yes, what an added bonus to a fighter – a revealing story about the character that grows while you go through the gauntlet! This isn’t a FinalFantasy story line or anything, but it is still nice to know a little bit why the scary nurse (Valentine) has it out for the end boss, or why another creepy ass character (Painwheel) has it out for the scary nurse.
Again, the art style here is appreciated. I loved Peacock – who looks like she was pulled from some sort of Steamboat Willie nightmare! Even the backgrounds are interactive and are interesting. The detraction for me, was there was hardly a pair of pants to be found. Anywhere. WHY DO I KNOW THAT PARASOUL WEARS PURPLE PANTIES? I feel like that’s something that didn’t need to be in my brain! Let your characters have big boobs. Or a big slit in her skirt. Or… insert visual appealing thing here. But don’t make that the soul focus! I mean, playing through as valentine it was all legs and boobs and fury. She actually leans over the corpse of whomever she beats, sticks a thermometer in her breasts, and it explodes…. presumably from how hot she is?
At a pricepoint of $14.99, this game is a fun fighter. It’s even more fun with a group of friends to watch the ridiculousness of all the legs and giant boobs and GIANT GUNS that come out of the most random places! My two cents? They could have made this game with a little less T&A and it still would have been great. But, that isn’t stopping me from playing. Check out SkullGirls, it’s worth it!
