Injustice: Gods Among Us
Injustice… let me count the ways I love thee. 1) Beautifully rendered side scrolling fighter game, 2) Fun ‘king of the fighting mountain’ play that gives you a satisfying story snippet of your hero at the end, and what everyone is talking about, 3) a fun compelling story mode that lets you play as more than one hero!
I don’t shy away from owning up that I am a DC fan girl, so when I got my hands on the promo for Injustice at PAX prime 2012, I may or may not* have squeeled like a little girl. I grew up playing Mortal Kombat (I admit to button mashing and Katana fan blading people until they fell into a bloody heep); and this game was a beautiful throw back to that style of fighter game, BUT, it included an amazing well flushed out story line that you expect from a more story based game like say, the Assassins Creed series.
*I TOTALLY squeeled like a little girl, and I made Charles and Jon wait in line to watch me play as Batman and kick Catwoman’s behind. I also have a lovely photo here of Jon making a grumpy cat face wearing the Injustice bandana.
When I first turned the game on and went into story mode, I was immediately amazed with the length of the story snippets. There is the length of may not quite a feature film, but a good movie to be made just out of the animation they made with the story. Spoilers in this paragraph! Still with me? Good – because the story is one that DC has told before, but it’s still good. The story jumps around a bit in the beginning, but it boils down to the Justice League core members find that they have been transported to an alternate earth – one where the Joker was given nuclear bombs and blew up metropolis, and somehow poisoned Superman with a drug that made him think he was fighting Doomsday, when in reality he was fighting Lois Lane. Whom was pregnant with his son. Just gonna let that sink in for a moment. When Sups realized what happened he lost it. He created the one earth government, convinced (or murdered in the case of Green Arrow) the other heroes to his way of thinking – save a small resistance group led by Batman – to his way of thinking…. and this is where OUR Justice League (and the Joker we all know and love) are transported. The story STARTS here. Big setup, and then you go from there. I won’t give it all away, because it really is a fun couple of hours to play your way through it all! /Spoilers
Now, once you play through story mode and you lament that it is over, head over to the battle mode where you pick a character to play, and you go through a ‘king of the mountain’ match of you vs 10 others one at a time. If you can defeat them all without loosing, you get a fun comic animation story about your character. I particularly suggest playing through this as Harley Quinn – her ending is CRAZY dark but fun. I forsee a bunch of cosplayers in Harley Quinn bloody wedding dresses at PAX this year.
All of this said though, I’d say this is a game you probably don’t need to own. Borrow it, get it from Gamefly (or Redbox if they ever get it in) because you only need it for a few hours. It’s a bunch of fun, but not something that i’m going to come back to regularly. So go get this game, play through it and then come back and geek out with me about the cool stories. I’d love to hear what characters you played through and what you thought!
